In-Car Sound Gets the Full Treatment from FOUR MASTERS

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

In-car sound gets the full treatment from FOUR MASTERS and so can you! We have mentioned many times the importance of sound treatment when installing replacement speakers into a car. This can add an uplift in performance of 25 – 50% depending on the build quality of the vehicle they are being installed into.

When a speaker produces sound it is projected forward but also backwards out of the speaker, and it is the backward radiation which causes the problem. The most influential distortion is that caused by reflected or back waves which bounce from any solid surface behind the speaker like, for instance a door panel. In this instance, the reflected sound can seriously impede free movement of the speaker cone and therefore cause a loss of power by cancelling forward sound projection these reflections also introduce distortion by effectively warping the cone out of shape.

In order to address these two significant problems, FOUR MASTERS apply a treatment system called Skinz. This consists of three elements; Skinz – a bituminous material which deadens the panel behind the speaker and eradicates energy sapping panel flex as well as significantly attenuating road noise Wave Diffuser - an irregular shaped dense foam square which breaks up backward reflections before they have a chance to hit any solid panels and Moisture Guard - an open cell foam which acts as a moisture barrier between the door panel and the rear of the speaker.

When properly installed the Skinz system will radically improve sound level, bass (which is more susceptible to cancellation) and longevity of your upgraded speakers. We can already hear you asking why car manufacturers don’t do this as a matter of course and the answer is simply, cost. Car manufacturers will not spend a penny more than necessary to build a car and good audio as opposed to “audio” is just not a consideration – this is why the average base model of budget or family car will have speakers fitted which cost pence rather than pounds and why the discerning music lover has to upgrade them to begin with. But don’t just take our word for it, ask anyone who has an interest in good sound!

Treat your car to great sound with Skinz sound deadening

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Treat your car to great sound with Skinz sound deadening. A car may seem a strange place to listen to beautiful hi-fi but when you have experienced sitting room quality audio in a car, you will never go back to that awful squawk-box fitted by the vehicle manufacturer. A well installed system begins with comprehensive sound damping and acoustic treatment where your speakers are to be positioned. The sound from a speaker is projected forward but an inescapable result of its construction means that an equal amount of sound is generated out of the rear and this proves a severe impediment to the performance of the speaker. Reflected sound from a door panel causes cone distortion which can destroy the clarity and precision of each speaker.

But, almost worse is if the surface from which the sound is reflected has it’s own resonance, you can easily create frequency distortion which will cancel out or overly boost certain frequencies resulting  in an uneven frequency response. So, if you want to get the best from your system it is wise to have an expert apply some sound treatment to your door panels and sometimes behind your dashboard, under the carpets and in the roof!.

FOUR MASTERS use Skinz sound treatment products as they are designed to optimise speaker performance. Skinz has three elements the first being a 3-layer membrane of aluminium and bituminous rubber. This is adhered to any potentially reflective surface in order to kill resonant frequencies. The next element is called wave diffuser which looks a little like the inside of an egg box but is made of a dense foam. This diffuses the output from the rear of your speaker before it hits the now damped surface behind, it then has a further diffusing effect on any residual sound that is reflected. The final element is called moisture guard and this is a coarser open cell foam which is transparent to sound but catches any water particles which may be projected toward the rear of the speaker or may seep in through leaking window rubbers for instance.

The application of Skinz can boost the performance of your speakers by a significant, audible amount and ultimately ensures you get better value for money from your equipment.

Upgrading speakers in a car is not necessarily as simple as throwing a new pair in. Speakers radiate sound from both the front and rear of the cone. Unfortunately, in a car, most of the sound from the rear, reflects back from untreated door panes and reduces the sound output from the front of the cone resulting in distortion and a noticeable drop in output in, especially, the bass frencies. To prevent this, Skinz from FOUR is a range of three products which deaden the door panels to prevent rattles and road noise, a moisture guard to prevent corrosion of speaker terminals from water ingress and condensation and Sound Diffuser which helps to disperse sound from the rear of the speaker cone thus improving performance in the car.
